Fry Club Colts Under 16’s 2002-03

Cup Finals Squad

Nick Frost - Nick joined Fry’s during the Under 14 season from St Anne’s after frustrating many teams, including Fry’s, with his goalkeeping prowess.  At the end of that year he won Player of the Year and last year was instrumental in Fry’s conceding just 24 goals in 24 games.  Fearless when it comes to making the important stop.

Mike Tarling - Mike joined Fry’s during the summer from Warmley ‘A’, and has been an instant hit with the rest of the team scoring their first goal of the season.  Mike has settled well into the team and has become an integral part of the defence.  Great skill on the ball and always looks for the calm pass rather than a simple wild clearance.

Liam Kavanagh - Liam joined Fry’s as an Under 9 and is one of the longest serving players.  His skill on the ball has meant that he has been able to adapt to various positions within the team and has played everywhere, except in goal, and has never let the team down.  Has been out of the team recently with a hip injury but is hopeful of recovering in time for the Final.

Curtis Jack - Curtis joined Fry’s as an Under 9 and won Player of the Year in his first spell.  Joined Warmley ‘A’ for two years, winning the league both times, before returning to Fry’s as an Under 14.  Won Player of the Year again last year and has attracted recent attention from both City & Rovers.  One of the most naturally gifted player’s you will ever see.  Twice voted Player’s Player of the Year.

Tom Hamblin - Tom joined Fry’s as an Under 12 having previously played up 2 year’s for Fry’s.  He very quickly became Captain and leader of the squad, and has led by example ever since.  This year he has been made Captain of the AYL rep team and recently made his debut for Gloucester FA Under 18’s.  Alongside Curtis, possibly the strongest central defensive pair in the league.  Twice voted Player’s Player of the Year.

Ricky Anstey - Ricky joined Fry’s at the start of the Under 15 season having previously won the league with Brislington.  His good humour and constantly smiling face has made him a big hit with the rest of the team.  His ability has also made him a virtual ever-present in the team this season, terrorising left back’s across the south west.

Ben Sinclair               -       Ben joined Fry’s near the end of last season after moving into the area from Brighton.  Twists, flicks and turns are Ben’s trademark, but unfortunately he was injured just three games into the season, and by his own admission, is just now getting back to full fitness.  Found the pace and physical aspect a lot harder than Brighton, but has quickly adapted.

Jason McCrossan - Jason joined Fry’s during the Under 8 season and is one of the longest serving players.  He won Player of the Year as an Under 11, and until Tom’s arrival, was captain of the team.  His pace and long throw have brought Fry’s many goals over the years but he was injured in the fourth game of the season and has only really returned in the last few weeks.

Jay Slade - Jay joined Fry’s halfway through the Under 12 season having not previously played, and ended the season as leading goal-scorer.  His pace and power have stunned many defences and he is currently the team’s highest goal-scorer, with 112 goals, made even more incredible with the fact that, due to injury, he has only played about 15 full games since Christmas 2000, and the majority of those in midfield.

Ian Field - Ian joined Fry’s at the beginning, as an under 8, and is the longest serving player in the team.  His quick feet and ball skills have dumbfounded many an opposition player and he was deservedly the Under 12 Player of the Year.  Many predicted that due to his small size, the step up to the 1st division would see Ian fade out of the team, but he has proved them all wrong and easily held his place for those 3 seasons.

Ricky Lewis - Ricky joined Fry’s this year and has very quickly settled into the side, playing both up front and in midfield.  His pace and ability has netted Ricky 9 goals so far this season, mainly from midfield, and he has created many more for other players.  As with the other Ricky, his good nature and quick wit has made him a firm favourite within the team.

Danny Hunt - Danny joined Fry’s as an Under 10 and quickly established himself as an expert marksman, scoring 54 goals as an Under 11.  Went to Warmley ‘A’ with Curtis and won the league twice.  Came back to Fry’s last year via Whitchurch ‘A’ and ended the season as the highest goal-scorer.  Was the Under 10 Player’s Player of the Year, and with 109 goals, is currently just 3 behind Jay as the all time highest.

Matt Green - Matt joined Fry’s as an Under 9, playing for the ‘B’ team and played for 3 years.  Signed for us as a back up player at Under 14 level and has always been available whenever we have needed him at a moments notice.  Matt is off to Cirencester Football Academy at the end of the season.

Joe Cook - Joe joined Fry’s at the start of the Under 14 season having previously played up a year for Hanham.  His speed has meant that as well as defending, he has become a valuable attacking option and scored in less than a minute earlier on in the season after coming on up front.  A possible broken wrist could rule him out of the Final.

Phil Knight - Phil joined Fry’s at the start of the Under 13 season having previously played up a year for Fry’s, and made the left back spot his own.  As well as defending duties he has deputised in goal on the odd occasion whenever Nick Frost is unavailable and proudly boasts of a better record between the sticks.  Reads the game well, and lack of physical speed is made up for by mental speed.

Mark Webb - Mark joined Fry’s as an Under 12 having won the league previously with Bitton.  A solid right back performer, he was soon transformed into a feared central midfield player during the Under 13 season where he has played ever since.  A major part of the team, Fry’s performance suffers whenever Mark’s performance does.  He won Player’s Player of the Year as an Under 14.

Dan Payne        - Dan joined Fry’s at the start of the Under 13 season having previously played up a year for Fry’s, and ended the season as Player of the Year.  Moved up front last year and ended just one goal behind Danny.  Dislocated his knee just 5 minutes from the end of last season but battled back in time for this one, only to be struck down again last month.  He is due to have his cast off on the day of the Final.

The Manager

Andy Glover - Andy Joined Fry’s aged 7 when they were Somerdale Wanderers and left when he was 16.  Returned to manage this team 6 years later and has enjoyed every minute.  A personal high this year has been to reach both the League and County Cup finals.  Andy also became the Fry’s Under 6 team manager this year and hopes for just as many good times.

Team History

Fry’s Under 16’s - Formed as Under 8’s in 1994, the team found their level as Under 11’s when, under the Somerdale Wanderers banner, they became the first, and so far only team from the club, to win a Hanham Minor League title, winning the 2nd Division.  Due to a Saturday/Sunday dispute with the landowners, they were too late to take their place in the 1st Division but became the first Fry’s team to play in the Avon Youth League when they went back into the 2nd Division and the following year as Under 13’s won that division, becoming the first and again, so far only Fry’s team to do so.  Finished 4th & then 2nd respectively in the top division.  Had a good run in the cup this year having made the finals of the Avon Youth League Cup and the Somerset FA Under 16 Youth Shield.
